Common Passport Photo Mistakes That Get Your Visa Rejected
The Most Common Passport Photo Mistakes
Having your visa application rejected because of a non-compliant photo is frustrating and costly. Here are the most common mistakes and how to avoid them.
1. Wrong Background Color
Many people use pure white when light gray is required, or have a background that is not uniform.
2. Incorrect Face Size
Your face should cover 70-80% of the photo height. Too small or too large and the photo will be rejected.
3. Shadows on Face or Background
Caused by harsh overhead lighting, side lighting, or standing too close to the background wall. Take your photo facing a window with natural, diffused light.
4. Eyes Not Fully Open
Both eyes must be clearly open and visible. Take multiple photos and choose one where your eyes are naturally open.
5. Wearing Glasses
Most Schengen countries recommend no glasses in passport photos since 2017. Simply remove them.
6. Wrong Expression
Smiling, raised eyebrows, or any non-neutral expression will lead to rejection.
7. Low Resolution or Blurry Photo
Minimum resolution is 600x600 pixels. Use your phone main camera, not the selfie cam.
8. Photo Too Old
Photos must be taken within the last 6 months.
